DILI, 01 august 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta met with Ludger Schuknecht, Vice President and Corporate Secretary of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), at the bank’s headquarters in Beijing, China.
The meeting highlighted the strong relationship between Timor-Leste and AIIB, with the country having been a member of the multilateral development bank since 2017.
During the talks, Schuknecht expressed appreciation for President Horta’s visit and discussed AIIB’s ongoing infrastructure projects across Asia. The conversation centered on potential investment opportunities in Timor-Leste, focusing on key areas such as infrastructure, connectivity, and climate change initiatives aligned with the Paris Agreement for both mitigation and adaptation.
The two leaders also explored possibilities for AIIB involvement in Timor-Leste’s agriculture, rural development, education, and health sectors.
Horta emphasized the importance of agricultural investment, particularly through private-sector partnerships, as well as rural development, clean water projects, and nutrition programs.
Schuknecht extended an invitation to Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Finance and Central Bank to participate in AIIB’s upcoming annual conference in Uzbekistan this September. This event will provide an opportunity for Timor-Leste to further engage with the bank and explore potential collaborations to support the country’s development goals.
