DILI, 16 january 2025 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste, through its Embassy in the US, reports that, despite the recent Los Angeles’ deadly wildfire, the two Timorese with dual nationality living in Los Angeles remain safe.
“In relation to the deadly wildfires in Los Angeles, there are no Timorese affected by the consequences of the incidents,” Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to the US, José Luís Guterres told TATOLI, today.
He said: “As far as I know, there are only two Timorese currently living in Los Angeles, namely Mr Jordão and Ms Tima.”
US Authorities reported that the Palisades Fire broke out as a bushfire the morning of january 7 in Pacific Palisades, a Los Angeles neighborhood east of Malibu.
At least 25 people have died in the Los Angeles fires and more than 80,000 residents have been warned to be ready to evacuate.
According to the authorities, more than 12,000 homes have been destroyed by the two largest wildfires in Los Angeles – the Palisades and Eaton fires.
US President Joe Biden said that reconstructing work on homes and businesses would cost tens of billions of dollars.
Firefighters made progress over the weekend in containing the Palisades and Eaton fires but warn that the return of high winds – forecast until Wednesday – could see these two spread again, or fuel new ones, BBC reported.
