DILI, 29 March 2025 (TATOLI)— The Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste expresses its deep dismay and solidarity with the governments and peoples of Thailand and Myanmar, which were strongly affected by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that shook the region on Friday, 28 March 2025, causing several fatalities, injuries, and significant material damage.
The Thai authorities have so far confirmed the deaths of at least three people in Bangkok, following the collapse of a building under construction, and dozens of people are still missing. In Myanmar, the earthquake, whose epicenter was located near the city of Mandalay, led to the declaration of a state of emergency in several regions of the country.
Timor-Leste joins in the suffering of the brotherly peoples of the region and conveys its most sincere condolences to the families of the victims, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured and those directly affected by this calamity. The government stands in solidarity with the emergency and reconstruction efforts in the affected countries, recognizing the resilience and strength of their populations at this time of great adversity.
The spokesperson for the IX Constitutional Government, Minister Agio Pereira, on behalf of the entire government, expressed his ‘solidarity with the people and governments of Thailand and Myanmar affected by this catastrophe’ and said that ‘at this difficult time, our thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we commend the commitment of all those who continue to dedicate themselves to searching for survivors and assisting the affected communities.
Meanwhile, the Myanmar–Thailand quake death toll rises to more than 150.
