EU Ambassador Meets with Prime Minister of Timor-Leste to discuss the presidential election process by 2022

DILI, 14 june 2021 (TATOLI) – Today, EU Head of Delegation Ambassador Andrew Jacob met with the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste Taur Matan Ruak, offering encouragement for the Timorese government’s preparation for the presidential election in 2022.

During the meeting, The EU Ambassador informed the head of Government that the multilateral organization is fully supported Timor-Leste for this process.

“We talked about the election will be held on March 2022, and the European Union has the experience for election observation on last 2017 and 2018. The European Union considers Democracy process for election is most important for all citizens in Timor-Leste. Everyone has the right and feel free to vote,” Ambassador Jacob said.

According to Ambassador Jacob, the EU always wants to stand behind efforts to support the democracy in Timor-Leste, through the monitoring election which is also as the form to strengthen the democratic process.

“We will support the National Election Commission (NEC) to prepare for the election, we will talk with the secretariat for the technical electoral commission (STAE) regarding the necessity of electoral system, particularly the technical assistance since EU is available to support the whole electoral process,” He said.
