DILI, 21 june 2021 (TATOLI)-The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MoFAC) of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste clarifies its position on the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on the Situation in Myanmar, adopted on 18 june 2021

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste has the honor to clarify that as a democratic country, the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste does not support the declaration of the state of emergency by the Myanmar armed forces on 1 february 2021 and subsequent actions towards the elected civilian Government.

This position was reflected in Timor-Leste’s statement on 12 March 2021, during the 46th Session of the Human Rights Council, whereby Timor-Leste expressed its concerns over the human rights situation in Myanmar and called for the release of arbitrary detainees, including political detainees. Furthermore, it has expressed its support for Myanmar’s democratic transition, and it has also called for all parties to maintain dialogue and resolve differences through peaceful means.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste has further the honor to inform that Timor-Leste voted in abstention on the resolution as there was no common position among the ASEAN member States, which have a key role in resolving the situation in Myanmar.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste wishes to reaffirms Timor-Leste’s steadfast commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights, and reiterates Timor-Leste’s support of the ASEAN facilitated peaceful solution in the interest of the people of Myanmar and their livelihood.
