DILI, 29 september 2021 (TATOLI) – The organization Pro-Ema and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Timor-Leste (CCI-TL) discussed the creation of a new food bank and a network to combat food waste to support people in need.
According to Pro-Ema’s Vice-Director, Ana Paulina da Costa, said the discussion aims to promote the social responsibility of entrepreneurs to contribute their products to the food bank to eradicate malnutrition and hunger in the community.
“This foodbank will collect food products that are almost out of date. We transform them into healthy and nutritious food. We will then distribute the food without charging any cost to the neediest, especially pregnant women and children”, said Costa, in Lecidere, Dili, on thursday.
She said the idea of creating this new food bank was based on the experience of the april flash flood, which left many in starvation due to lack of clean water, food, clothing, and medicines.
The Executive Director of CCI-TL, Rui Alexandrinho Pacheco acknowledged that many businessmen are unaware of the role of the food bank.
“Through this activity, CCI-TL will facilitate a connection between Pro-Ema and national and international companies, including shopping centers to contribute food to this food bank”, he stressed.
The first food bank in the country was established in june to combat malnutrition and hunger. Pro-Ema was founded in March 2018.
