DILI, 31 january 2022 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament (NP) held an urgent discussion with the Minister of Health (MoH) regarding the increasing cases of dengue fever in Timor – Leste.

The discussion between the Minister of Health and the NP discussed the strategic methods that have been conducted by the Ministry of Health to prevent cases of dengue fever and what needs to be done to prevent cases of dengue fever in the future.

Previously, the President of the National Parliament, Aniceto Longinhos Guterres Lopes, informed that this discussion was held to hear directly from the Government’s actions because currently dengue fever has become a public concern and has killed dozens of children of Timor – Leste.

The National Directorate of Public Health through the Department of Vigilant of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Health reported that the cases of dengue fever from january 30, were recorded at 1198 and 20 children had died.

The majority of dengue fever cases were in Dili with 809 cases, Ermera 77 cases, Manatuto 77 cases, Baucau 52 cases, Manufahi 52 cases, Covalima 43 cases, Bobonaro 25 cases, Liquiça 21 cases, Aileu 16 cases, Ainaro 14 cases, Vikeke 10 cases, and RAEOA two cases.

While the majority of children who died were from Dili, 11 people, four people Ermera, one Viqueque, two Covalima, one Bobonaro and one Ainaro, with a Case Fatality Rate of National Level of 1.7%.

Most cases of dengue were detected at the Administrative Post of Dom Aleixo with 412, Cristo Rei 162 and Post Administrative of Nain Feto with 111.

Therefore, the MoH urges all the people of Timor – Leste to take their children to the nearest Health Center if there are symptoms of dengue fever such as vomiting and fever to get medical help.

It is also appealing to all the people of Timor – Leste to coordinate with local authorities, clean the environment, such as flower pots, water tanks, and garbage to avoid mosquito bites because dengue fever comes from mosquito bites.
