Renewal of Timorese passport abroad brings $220.400.00 to the state treasury

DILI, 10 february 2022 (TATOLI)- The Ministry of Justice (MJ) through the National Directorate of Civil Identification and Criminal Registration (DNICRC) several months ago brought the Passport Kit system to extend the passports of Timor-Leste citizens in diaspora because they cannot return to Timor–Leste to extend the passport related to the lockdown in every country to prevent the surge of Covid – 19.

“The Ministry of Justice together with the DNICRC in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MoFAC) brought the passport kit system to extend the passports of Timor-Leste citizens abroad. They cannot return to Timor–Leste because there is no air plane related to the lock down in several countries to prevent Covid – 19,” the Director General of DNICR, Victor da Costa Neto told Tatoli in his office, Mandarin Dili, today.

Victor da Costa Neto informed, the Government through the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with MoFAC decided to extend the passports of Timor-Leste citizens in four countries such as the United Kingdom, Portugal, Northern Ireland and South Korea based on the reports from the Ambassadors of Timor-Leste in these countries that many citizens of Timor – Leste ‘s passport were expired but cannot return to Timor–Leste because of Covid – 19.

“We decided to bring the Timor-Leste ‘s passport system kit to Portugal, South Korea, the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland because many Timor-Leste citizens are continuing their studies in Portugal and there are also many Timorese workers in South Korea, Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom. We wish to facilitate them to prevent deportation,” Victor da Costa Neto said.

The renewal passport of Timorese citizens in Portugal, South Korea, United Kingdom and Northern Ireland starts from 05 september 2021 and conclude on 14, january 2022. From the renewal passports, Portugal recorded 202 people, the United Kingdom recorded 656 people, Northern Ireland recorded 200 people and South Korea recorded 1,146 people with a total of 2,204 passport renewals.

Each Passport unit is paid $ 100, therefore from the 2204 person, DNICRC collected $220,400 to the state treasury to be used in building the national development process in Timor–Leste.
