To improve child nutrition, international partners and MoH launch 5S project

DILI, 08 march 2022 (TATOLI)- The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as an international protective partner with the Ministry of Health (MoH) this tuesday launched a project with the theme ‘Say No to 5S in School’ (Starvation, soil transmitted helminthiasis, smoking and sugary/alcoholic drinking).

The Representative of WFP in Timor–Leste, Dageng Liu informed that, the objective of the 5S project is to improve wellbeing, health and nutrition of school aged children.

“All Timorese children aged 6 – 14 years old based on the data there are 150,445 male and 146,179 female children that will be benefited for this this project,’’ the Representative of WFP in Timor – Leste, Dageng Liu told TATOLI in City 8 Canossa, Has- Laran Dili on this tueday.

The Representative of WFP, Dageng Liu added that the project of 5S had taken place in three municipalities on intervention for nutrition, school feeding and hygienic kitchens.

“79,000 students in 400 schools in the municipalities of Baucau, Bobonaro and Manufahi, indirectly 600,000 Timorese community members had benefited from this project,” Dageng Liu said.

At the same the place, the Ambassador of South Korea in Timor–Leste, Kim Jeong Ho appreciates the project of 5S from the donation of Government of South Korea through its organization of KOICA in Timor – Leste, work together with the Minister of Health, WFP and WHO to run this the 5S in Timor–Leste.

“I hope that on five years coming, we will improve the nutrition of school aged children in across the Timor – Leste, by improving the nutrition, through the School Feeding ‘Merenda Escolar’, the school children will diligent to go to school and chase their dreams to improve Timor–Leste in the upcoming future,’’ Ambassador South Korea Kim Jeong Ho said.

Meanwhile the Health Minister of Timor–Leste, Odete Maria Freitas Belo, on behalf of the Government thanked the Government of Republic of Korea through KOICA which had donated the budget to partners such as WFP, WHO and the Ministry of Health to run the project of 5S during four years, to improve wellbeing, health and nutrition of school aged children in Timor -Leste.

The project of 5S will be implemented by the WFP, WHO working together with the Ministry of Health and facilitated by the KOICA with a total budgeted $7.86M USD during four years (2021-2025).
