DILI, 23 April 2022 (TATOLI) – Zayed Award for Human Fraternity praised the newly elected President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, Jose Ramos Horta for building an international human rights network that paved the way for East Timor’s (Now Timor-Leste) independence.
“His Excellency José Ramos-Horta, former President of East Timor, Nobel Peace Laureate, and Zayed Award for Human Fraternity 2022 judging committee member has once again been elected to his nation’s highest office as the new President of East Timor,” said Zayed Award for Human Fraternity in a statement posted on saturday, following Horta’s landslide victory in the 2022 Timor-Leste Presidential Election.
The statement also states that apart from being instrumental in building an international human rights network for Timor-Leste’s independence, Horta also worked towards resolving conflict in the nation through peaceful and just solutions.
In november 2021, Horta called on the Government of the Timor-Leste to adopt the “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together.
The Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together is a joint statement signed by Pope Francis of the Catholic Church and Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, on february 4, 2019, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
“I will talk to the Government and the President of the Republic to adopt this important document as an official document of Timor-Leste. This is because Pope Francis and Grand Imam had called on all leaders across the globe to adopt the documents to be introduced into the school’s curriculum,” said Horta.
Horta stressed that it was important to adopt the document before Pope Francis visited Timor-Leste, the second predominantly Catholic country in Asia after the Philippines.
