DILI, 10 may 2022 (TATOLI)- The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNCPD) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MoFAC) today organizes the ‘In-Country Training Programme on Gender – Mainstreaming Small Arms Control’ in Timor – Leste to track illicit trade in small arms and light weapons with a focus on gender.
The Director-General for Multilateral and Regional Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Lucínio Branco said, The training is given to the member of the Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL), member of the Timor-Leste Defense Force (F-FDTL), Customs Service, Immigration Unit, Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Interior with other staff from relevant institutions.
“This training is organized by the UNRCPD and MoFAC to facilitate the PNTL and F-FDTL and staffs from the relevant institutions in Timor – Leste, to exercise on the reporting template the Program of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons with all its aspect that focuses on gender,”
Branco also considered the training is important, saying in Timor-Leste only two institutions that have the right to use the weapons, thus this training will provide sufficient knowledge for them to use the small arms control and normative framework,’’ Lucínio Branco told TATOLI in MoFAC’s meeting room, Pantai Kelapa, Dili today.
The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Timor – Leste, Roy Trivedi, appreciated this training program and expected that all representatives from PNTL, Civil Society, and the relevant institutions will take benefit from this training.
“Together we can track illicit trade in small arms and light weapons and its aspect with a focus on gender-based violence as well as combat the crime and terrorism at the global and promote the peace and human rights around the world including Timor – Leste,’’ said Trivedi.
At the same place the Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to Timor – Leste Andrew Jacobs, said the “In-Country Training Programme on Gender – Mainstreaming Small Arms Control’’ is organized around the world including Timor – Leste to celebrate the 22 years of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women Peace and Security.
“There is no real peace and security without women and girls thus, the EU wishes to support training on Gender – Mainstreaming Small Arms Control to facilitate the participant’s information to increase their knowledge to promote the peace and human right based on the gender equality’’ said the Ambassador of EU Andrew Jacobs.
In-Country Training Programme on Gender – Mainstreaming Small Arms Control will take place for three days. starting from May 10 to may 12, with the financial support from European Union.
