MTCI and MECAE discuss the development of tourism in Timor-Leste

DILI, 20 september 2022 (TATOLI) – Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs (MKAE) as Chair of the Inter-Ministerial Commission for Tourism Development of Timor-Leste, Joaquim Amaral highlighted the need for the involvement of relevant agencies in the discussion of tourism development in Timor-Leste (TL).

“We need to involve the relevant ministries and the private sector to develop tourism,” Minister Joaquim said at the launching of the first report of the Inter-Ministerial Commission for TL Tourism Development in Colmera, Dili.

He said that currently, the Inter-Ministry of Tourism Development Commission needed to complete the list and also wanted to form an inspection team to regulate tourist sites.

Minister Joaquim Amaral, said a larger budget should be allocated to rehabilitate tourist attractions in Timor-Leste, adding that currently, the existing tourism center does not fully have sufficient facilities.

He said that the World Bank had conducted a study on tourism offers in Timor-Leste which would become a reference for the Government and academics in developing the tourism sector.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Tourism, Trade, and Industry, José Lucas do Carmo da Silva, also reminded that his ministry had implemented, Community Tourism Projects in several villages in the municipalities of Ainaro, Aileu, Baucau, and Viqueque last year.

“We have rehabilitated Bee-Manas in Uamori and One Dollar Beach in Metinaro, Dili municipality but the ministry continues to rehabilitate other tourist sites as well”

He said it is necessary to have the presence of the private sector to contribute and discuss and consult with the government’s politics to develop the tourism sector.
