ADTL organizes important activities to welcome the commemoration of the International Day of PwD

DILI, 23 november 2022 ( TATOLI)- The Executive Director of the Association of Disability of Timor – Leste ( ADTL), Cesario da Silva, said ADTL along with other Disabled Organizations in Timor – Leste, including the Association of Vision Impairment of Timor – Leste ( AHMDTL), Raes Hadomi Timor Oan ( RHTO), East Timor Blind Union ( ETBU) and Ahisaun create a joint commission to organize the International Day of Persons with Disabilities ( PwD) set to be organized on 03 of December 2022.

“We have formed a joint commission, a commission composed of all PwD organizations to organize the several activities to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, on 03 December,” the Executive Director of ADTL, Cezario da Silva, told TATOLI in his office Mascarenhas, Dili on wednesday.

A theme for this year’s celebration is “Count with Me on the Disabled in Timor – Leste,’ following this year’s celebration Cezario da Silva said ADTL will welcome the day by organizing several important activities and inviting international partners to attend.

“ADTL together with all PwD organizations will conduct several important activities, particularly a workshop that will involve all the international partners such as UNICEF, UN Women, National Parliament, and Government to talk about the general theme for this year ‘Count with Me on Disabled in Timor – Leste’

While on December 3, ADTL will also organize a painting competition for the public and a leisurely walk with all PwD members starting from Colmera to the office of the Presidency of the Republic Aitarak-Laran.

da Silva revealed that the International Day of Disabilities is annually celebrated to eliminate stigma and provide support for the rights to increase dignity and welfare given to persons with disabilities.

Welcome this celebration, Silva said, ADTL spend US$ 25,000 for the commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. 

” The fund is contributed from the Government of Australia through the Partnership of Human Development ( PhD), OXFAM, Plan International, Ministry of Social Solidarity and Inclusiveness ( MSSI), and the Secretary State of Youth and Sports ( SSYS),” he said.

The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic, and cultural life.
