UNTL  encourages farmers to plant vanilla to diversify the economy of Timor – Leste

DILI, 05 november 2022 ( TATOLI)– National University of Timor – Lerosa’e ( UNTL) through the Economic Faculty encourage the farmers to plant vanilla to support the country’s diversifying economic growth in the future.

Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Economics of UNTL Silviro A. Pinto Cabral said the vanilla prices are extremely high therefore farmers in Timor – Leste is required to plant vanilla.

“Vanilla prices in Timor – Leste range from $ 70 to $ 100 while the international market price such as in Australia cost per kilo is $ 750, with such price Timor – Leste farmers are encouraged to continue planting vanilla because the products are mostly in demand in the International market,” Deputy Dean, Cabral told TATOLI at his office Colmera Dili on Monday

Cabral explained that vanilla cultivation is suitable for planting in all fields, the important thing that requires to do is well management and well cultivation.

“UNTL through the Faculty of Economics willing to cooperate with the Government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and related institutions to conduct training on how to harvest the vanillas for farmers who are interested in growing vanilla in Timor – Leste,” he said.

This policy was carried out to replace Timor – Leste’s coffee which is very cheap compared to vanilla and also to increase Timor – Leste’s economic growth in the future.
