DILI, 07 december 2022 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste expressed condolences on the death of former Chinese President Jiang Zemin.
“It was with deep sadness that the Timor-Leste Government received the news of the death of the former President of the People’s Republic of China, Jiang Zemin, at the age of 96,” The Spokesperson of the Government, Minister Fidelis Magalhães, said in a statement.
Jiang Zemin died on wednesday november 30, 2022, in Shanghai of leukemia and multiple organ failure.
He was the President of the People’s Republic of China from 1993 to 2003 and Secretary-General of the Chinese Communist Party from 1989 to 2002.
In his letter to the Presidency of the Republic of Timor-Leste, on the occasion of the Restoration of Independence, on may 20, 2002, Jiang Zemin said: “The traditional friendship between the people of China and the people of Timor-Leste goes back to ancient times”, as a result of “exchanges and cooperation in the political, economic, commercial and other fields”, and expressed his will “to work tirelessly to constantly promote the ties of good friendship and cooperation between China and Timor-Leste.”
Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, highlighted his role in opening China to the world and global markets, leading to the country’s transformation into a world power.
On behalf of the Council of Ministers and the entire Government, Magalhães presented his “sincere condolences to the Chinese Government and all the People of the People’s Republic of China, especially the Chinese community in Timor-Leste.”
