DILI, 30 march 2023 (TATOLI) – The National Elections Commission (CNE) will hold public debates in may with representatives of the political parties contesting for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

These debates will take place in Oka 7984 hall, in Hudi-Laran, Dili, to increase the accountability of political parties.

The debates would raise the awareness of the voters on specific political parties, their vision, policies, programs, and so on.

The political debates also help inform citizens of their choices at the ballot box.

CNE President José Belo said that the debates will take place between may 1 and 10 and between may 16 and 18: “The debates will be broadcasted on state television known as RTTL.”

A number of important issues will be covered in the debate, including the economy, health, education, infrastructure, as well as civic education.

Belo said the debates would target young people to increase their involvement in politics in order to contribute to decision-making.

It is said that a lack of information about elections in a young democratic country like Timor-Leste will contribute to weakening the accountability of elected politicians and consequently decision-making.

“Therefore, it is important to involve young people in politics so that they can make suggestions for the benefit of the State,” said Belo, in Dili.

Representatives of the 17 qualified political parties will participate in the debates, several days before the may-21 elections.
