DILI, 23 january 2024 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste, through the Secretariat of State for Art and Culture (SoSAC), has allocated US$500,000 for Timor-Leste’s preparation to participate in the 60th International Art Exhibition in Italy, which will take place from saturday 20 april to sunday 24 november 2024 (pre-opening on 17, 18 and 19 April).

The Secretary of State for Arts and Culture, Jorge Soares Cristovão, explained that the preparation process itself had been carried out since october 2023.

“I was appointed by Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão to lead Timor-Leste’s preparations for our participation in the exhibition,” said Cristovão.

He said that Timor-Leste will be showcasing its art and culture, as well as exhibiting Timorese hand-woven traditional textile, known as Tais.

Cristovão said that several local Timorese artists had been chosen to present Timorese art and culture and cultural artifacts at the event.

“Our artist Maria Madeira will represent Timor-Leste at this event. In addition, we have also chosen Natalia King as our curator,” she said.

Maria Madeira was chosen because she produced heaps of her own artworks, which have been exhibited in international art galleries.
