DILI, 23 april 2024 (TATOLI) – Kristin M. Kane, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary (PDAS) in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Global Public Affairs, is on a three-day visit to Timor-Leste. PDAS Kane’s presence underscores the enduring partnership between the United States and Timor-Leste, rooted in our shared democratic values.
During the visit, PDAS Kane is engaging with key government officials, expected to include Minister of Education Dulce de Jesus Soares, and Secretary of State for Equality key officials. PDAS Kane is pleased to convey the U.S. Government’s congratulations to Timor-Leste on its recent accession to the World Trade Organization, an achievement that enjoyed strong U.S. support and a milestone that solidifies even further our positive bilateral relationship, opening new avenues for economic collaboration.
Optimistic about the future and the United States’ deepening partnership and cooperation with Timor-Leste, including active support for Timor-Leste’s aspirations to join ASEAN, English-language program offerings, and substantial development aid in the sectors of agriculture, clean water access, and sustainable tourism development, PDAS Kane said, “Cultural exchanges and diplomatic engagements strengthen our nations’ bonds and foster mutual growth. I commend Timor-Leste on its successful accession to the WTO, progress toward ASEAN membership, and its dedication to meeting its MCC Compact commitments, all of which demonstrate dedicated commitment to progress. The United States stands ready to support Timor-Leste’s development goals.” U.S. commitment also extends to enhancing border and maritime security capabilities, fostering greater collaboration on humanitarian and disaster relief efforts, and contributing to infrastructure projects such as the ongoing rehabilitation and upgrade of Baucau Airfield.
In addition to high-level diplomatic engagements, PDAS Kane’s visit includes a tour of the Timor Coffee Cooperative (CCT), meetings with YSEALI alumni active in environmental issues, and a tour of the Caltech Recycling facilities – commemorating Earth Day 2024 – capped by an exclusive interview with RTTL.
