DILI, 31 may 2024 (TATOLI) – Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão conveys a message of condolence to the people of PNG and the families of the victims of the massive landslide that swept over a remote village in the small nation in the southwestern Pacific.

PNG’s National Disaster Centre told the UN office that more than 2,000 people had been buried alive by the landslide that occurred last friday.

Six villages in Enga province were almost wiped out when a chunk of Mount Mungalo collapsed at around 3 am local time last friday, while the communities were still sleeping inside their homes.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the victims of the landslide,” said the Prime Minister in a statement.

Gusmão called on all countries to support the families in the search for their loved ones who are still buried.

UN Secretary-General, António Guterres said he was “deeply saddened” by the reported loss of hundreds of lives in PNG during a massive landslide.

He extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and expresses his solidarity with the people and Government of Papua New Guinea.

The United Nations and its partners are supporting the Government’s response efforts.  The Secretary-General underscores that the United Nations stands ready to offer additional assistance at this challenging time.
