DILI, 16 july 2024 (TATOLI) – The New Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Donna Ann Welton presented her Letter of Credence to the President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta in an official ceremony held at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace.
Ambassador Welton brings over three decades of distinguished service in the U.S. Foreign Service to her new position. Her extensive diplomatic career includes key positions across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, with notable roles as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary, Assistant Chief of Mission in Kabul, and Deputy Chief of Mission in Helsinki.
Ambassador Welton’s diverse background, which includes expertise in Japanese art and strategic studies at the Army War College, along with her fluency in Japanese and proficiency in several languages including Indonesian, will serve her well as she assumes this important post.
The United States has been a steadfast partner in Timor-Leste’s journey to independence and continues to play a crucial role in the nation’s development. The U.S. assistance programs in Timor-Leste include USAID development aid, security cooperation, law enforcement training, Peace Corps, and Millennium Challenge Corporation projects focused on water sanitation and education
Timor-Leste looks forward to continued robust cooperation with the United States of America under Ambassador Welton’s leadership. President Ramos-Horta is confident that Ambassador Welton’s appointment will further elevate and strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
