DILI, 25 February 2025 (TATOLI) – The Hungarian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Lilla Karsay, has expressed Hungary’s interest in recruiting both skilled and unskilled workers from Timor-Leste.

Ambassador Karsay made the statement after a meeting with the Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment, Rogério Araújo Mendonça, in Dili on Monday (24/02).

Karsay said that Hungary is facing a significant labor shortage, which is creating a high demand for skilled and unskilled workers in various fields.

“Timor-Leste has a lot to offer from unskilled and skilled workers. And in Hungary, we have a big demand for unskilled and skilled workers,” Karsay told reporters. “We need to make sure that all the legal basis could be there and then we can further discuss how we can bring Timorese workers to Hungary.”

Meanwhile, Mendonça said that strengthening cooperation between the governments of Timor-Leste and Hungary is key for establishing a bilateral labor agreement between the two countries.

During the meeting, Mendonça stressed the importance of establishing a labor mobility agreement with Hungary, the first European country to express interest in recruiting skilled and unskilled workers from Timor-Leste.

He concluded that once the program is established, Timorese workers would be recruited to work for up to nine months in Hungary, with the possibility of an extension of up to four years.
