DILI, 23 May 2025 (TATOLI) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito Freitas, held his first courtesy meeting on Thursday with CHUN Sovannarith, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Kingdom of Cambodia to Timor-Leste, following the formal commencement of the ambassador’s diplomatic mission.
Ambassador CHUN Sovannarith presented the Letter of Credence to the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, on April 29 of this year, with the aim of marking a historic stage and strengthening the partnership in the bilateral relationship between the two countries after the establishment of the Cambodian Embassy in Dili.
During the meeting, Ambassador CHUN Sovannarith expressed his gratitude to the Government of Timor-Leste for hosting the official visit of the President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, HUN SEN, and his delegation to Timor-Leste from 7 to 9 May this year.
Minister Bendito Freitas reported that the visit of the President of the Senate of Cambodia, HUN SEN, to Timor-Leste was very important to further strengthen the ties of friendship and bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The former Prime Minister of Cambodia arrived in Timor-Leste and was received by the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, and the Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, at the airport and then proceeded to the Hotel.
It was a reception that demonstrated a very strong relationship between the leaders of Timor-Leste and Cambodia. With this demonstration, the relationship between the two countries is increasingly strengthened.
Meanwhile, Timor-Leste and Cambodia have established diplomatic relations since 2002, and in 2016, Timor-Leste officially opened its Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
