DILI, 30 May 2025 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos Horta expressed his profound condolences following the passing of António Pinto Barbedo de Magalhães, a distinguished figure in Portuguese academia and one of the most steadfast voices in defense of the Timorese cause during the difficult years of Indonesian occupation.

In a letter of condolence addressed to Inês Monteiro Barbedo de Magalhães, daughter of António Pinto Barbedo de Magalhães, on May 29, 2025, the President extended his heartfelt condolences to Professor Barbedo de Magalhães’ family, the University of Porto, and all his friends, honoring his memory with respect and gratitude.

Magalhães dedicated decades of his life with intelligence, courage, and generosity to promoting the rights of the Timorese people, both academically and civically, within Portugal and internationally. His connection to Timor-Leste dates back to 1974, when he coordinated a visionary education restructuring project in Dili at a time when independence seemed distant.

Throughout his career, Magalhães maintained his tireless commitment by coordinating the Timor Days at the University of Porto, serving as a member of the Commission for the Rights of the Maubere People and the Association for Peace and Justice for Timor-Leste. Through his publications of fundamental books and documents on Timor-Leste’s political history, he contributed significantly to raising international awareness about the legitimacy and urgency of the Timorese struggle for independence.

Horta stated, “Timor-Leste will never forget his friendly and supportive voice, and will perpetuate his name as one of the great defenders of our dignity and self-determination.”

The President recalled the words of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel: “The opposite of love is not hatred, it is indifference,” noting that Magalhães was always the opposite of indifference.
