DILI, 04 July 2025 (TATOLI) — The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will provide a new incinerator to Guido Valadares National Hospital (HNGV) after the current one broke down, said Clementino da Costa, the hospital’s Director of Administration, Finance, and Logistics.
“Our incinerator has stopped working. The exhaust pipe is damaged — instead of the smoke rising, it spreads around the machine,” Costa explained.
Recently, local residents raised concerns about smoke spreading to nearby areas during incineration, prompting worries over public health and environmental impact.
In response, the Secretary of State for Toponymy and Urban Organization recommended relocating the incinerator to Tíbar in Liquiçá, where Dili’s main waste disposal site is located.
However, HNGV management declined the proposal, arguing that relocating the incinerator would cause delays and result in a significant accumulation of medical waste.
In the meantime, the hospital continues to use the malfunctioning incinerator during nighttime hours while awaiting the arrival of the replacement unit.
