DILI, 30 August 2025 (TATOLI) – The 26th anniversary of the Popular Consultation was commemorated in Dili with a long march organized by the Ministry of State Administration. The procession began at Motael Church, passed through Bidau Santana, and culminated in Lecidere, where participants gathered to reflect on the historic vote held 26 years ago.
Minister of State Administration Thomas Cabral described the day as “a moment of reflection and national pride,” honoring the courage of the Timorese people who, on August 30, 1999, voted overwhelmingly for independence and sovereignty.
Cabral emphasized that although Timor-Leste is a small island, it has always had “a huge heart” in resisting occupation from 1975 to 1999. He also noted that many Timorese now live and study abroad, while the nation continues to assert itself on the international stage. He cited the successful visit of Pope Francis last year as a testament to national unity.
Speaking at the same event, President of the Republic José Ramos-Horta stated that Timor-Leste’s independence was achieved through the efforts of the Timorese people, including “several leaders such as Xanana Gusmão,” who led negotiations with the United Nations, Indonesia, and Portugal to facilitate the Popular Consultation on August 30, 1999.
President Horta underscored the importance of national reconciliation, cooperation among leaders, and collective efforts by citizens to build a better country and honor the sacrifices made for independence.
“Timor-Leste’s independence is a triumph,” said Horta, describing the nation as a “young, imperfect, and vibrant democracy” since gaining independence in 2002. He acknowledged ongoing challenges such as poverty but highlighted significant progress in healthcare, infrastructure, and electrification. He also advocated for regional cooperation to secure Timor-Leste’s future.
The ceremony included the laying of a wreath at the Monument to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Lecidere. Attendees included the Archbishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Dili, Dom Virgílio Cardeal do Carmo da Silva; Minister of Health Élia Amaral; Minister of the Interior Francisco Guterres; Secretary of State for Forestry Fernandinho Vieira; Timorese youth; and other distinguished guests.
