DILI, 09 September 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta, has expressed his profound solidarity with the Portuguese people following the tragic accident on the Funicular da Glória in Lisbon, a popular tourist tram route connecting the Baixa district with the Bairro Alto.
In an official letter to the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President Ramos-Horta stated: “It was with deep consternation that I received the tragic news of the accident at the Funicular da Glória in Lisbon, which killed dozens of passengers and caused the irreparable loss of so many lives.”
President Ramos-Horta expressed his nation’s condolences and solidarity to the bereaved families during this time of grief.
Lisbon’s famous Glória funicular cable railway derailed on Wednesday evening, killing at least 16 people and injuring around 20, according to local media reports.
Police said the victims included five Portuguese, three Britons, two South Koreans, two Canadians, and an American, a Ukrainian, a Swiss, and a French citizen.
