DILI, 26 September 2025 (TATOLI) – Following a meeting with representatives from the University Students of Timor-Leste (EUTL), the President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta, expressed his unequivocal support for their demands, declaring he is “100% in agreement” with their position.
The President praised the students for their peaceful and just demonstration, stressing that their call to abolish lifelong pensions for Members of Parliament reflects the general sentiment of the Timorese people. The Head of State commended their civic engagement as a positive force for strengthening the nation’s democratic institutions and ensuring that public funds are used responsibly.
The President confirmed his intention to promptly promulgate the new law once it is officially sent by the National Parliament. He also reiterated his long-standing opposition to the lifelong pension scheme, a position he has held since 2007, highlighting the social injustice of granting such benefits to officials with high salaries while essential public servants, such as teachers and health professionals, receive modest salaries. He considered this measure a necessary correction to ensure greater fairness and to prioritize collective well-being over individual privileges.
President Ramos-Horta framed the legislative change as a fundamental step toward redirecting the state budget to more productive sectors. In line with the students’ demands, he highlighted the need to increase investment in education and rural development.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring a budget that addresses the essential needs of the population, reduces inequalities, and promotes sustainable and inclusive growth for all Timorese citizens.
