DILI, 24 October 2025 (TATOLI) – President and Nobel Peace Laureate. Jose Ramos-Horta extended his warmest congratulations to Sanae Takaichi on her election as the First Female Prime Minister of Japan.
In a historic milestone, Japan’s parliament has elected Sanae Takaichi as the nation’s first female Prime Minister. This follows her recent precedent-setting election as the first woman to lead the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). A member of the House of Representatives since 1993, Prime Minister Takaichi brings over thirty years of political experience, including key ministerial roles in economic security, science and technology policy, internal affairs, and communications.
In a congratulatory letter addressed to the Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, President Ramos-Horta highlighted the historic significance of her election stated: “The election of Your Excellency, the first woman to assume the highest position in the Japanese Government, constitutes a historic milestone and a testimony to the vitality of Japanese democracy. This moment inspires not only the present generations, but also future female leaders across Asia and the world.”
The President reaffirmed the fundamental partnership Japan has been for the sustainable development of Timor-Leste since the restoration of its independence.
The President expressed confidence that under Prime Minister Takaichi’s determined and experienced leadership, the bonds of friendship, cooperation, and solidarity between the two nations will continue to deepen and flourish for the benefit of their peoples.
President Ramos-Horta concluded his message by wishing Prime Minister Takaichi every success in her high function and expressed his sincere desire to further strengthen the strategic partnership between Timor-Leste and Japan. This continued collaboration is essential for the peace, stability, and prosperity of their common region.
