DILI, 07 November 2025 (TATOLI) – The OceanXplorer, a scientific research vessel from the organization OceanX based in Singapore, docked today at Tíbar Port in Liquiçá. The vessel will remain in Timor-Leste for two weeks to conduct marine research.
OceanXplorer Executive Director, Vincent Pierobon, said that a team of 17 researchers, in collaboration with the Timorese Government, will study the country’s waters to assess their scientific and environmental potential. The mission aims to support Timor-Leste in protecting and managing its marine resources sustainably.
The mission leader, Andrew Craig, explained that the researchers will dive into deep waters, use helicopters and drones to observe whales, collect samples, and operate infrared cameras.
He added that the team will conduct a bathymetric survey around Ataúro Island to deepen understanding of the marine ecosystem, from the deep sea to coastal areas.
Craig further noted that some parts of Ataúro have never been mapped before, and the research could reveal new underwater and geological formations, providing valuable data for future exploration in Timor-Leste’s seas.
