DILI, 24 November 2025 (TATOLI) – The Ambassadors’ Group of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) in Timor-Leste was formally established on 19 November.
The formalization took place during a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, where the ambassadors of Angola, Brazil, and Portugal in Timor-Leste submitted a verbal note confirming the group’s establishment.
The information was disclosed by Portugal’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Duarte Alves, on the sidelines of a Christmas event held over the weekend at the Jorge Sampaio Cultural Center in Dili.
Alves said the group’s priorities have not yet been defined, as the formalization process was only recently completed.
He said that the promotion of the Portuguese language will be one of the group’s priorities.
“The Portuguese language is naturally a shared priority for all CPLP member states. With Timor-Leste now a member of ASEAN, new opportunities are emerging to strengthen the presence of Portuguese in the region,” he told Tatoli.
Alves stressed that the new group aims to deepen coordination among CPLP countries represented in Dili, while maintaining close cooperation with the Timorese state.
“The group will officially begin operating in January 2026. Until then, the ambassadors will meet with Timorese authorities to outline a work program and set a list of priorities,” he said.
