DILI, 02 December 2025 (TATOLI) – Canada’s Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, Jess Dutton, reaffirmed his government’s readiness to expand cooperation and explore new investment opportunities in Timor-Leste.
Dutton delivered the message following his meeting with Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão at the Government Palace on Tuesday.
He described the discussion as warm and constructive, noting that both sides addressed strategic issues of mutual priority. A key focus, he said, was Canada’s continued support for Timor-Leste’s progress toward full ASEAN membership.
According to the ambassador, Canada maintains a strong partnership with ASEAN and is actively engaged in several programs with the regional bloc.
The meeting also covered emerging areas of bilateral cooperation. Dutton highlighted growing interest from Canadian companies that are beginning to explore investment prospects in Timor-Leste.
He further noted that negotiations on a free trade agreement between Canada and ASEAN could eventually bring significant benefits to Timor-Leste once it fully integrates into the regional structure.
In addition to economic matters, both parties exchanged views on broader global issues and reaffirmed their long-term commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
Dutton added that his working relationship with Prime Minister Xanana continues to strengthen, marked by increasing engagement and mutual appreciation for the long-standing ties between the two nations.
