Timor-Leste and Indonesia commit to ensuring border security during Christmas and New Year

OECUSSI, 16 December 2025 (TATOLI) – The National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL), through its Border Patrol Unit (UPF), together with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), have pledged to safeguard security along the border areas from Oecussi through Bobonaro to Covalima during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.

“As Christmas and New Year approach, I have coordinated with the commander of Satgas-Pamtas, and we are committed to ensuring security along the border. Communities must also respect the laws of each nation in order to avoid misunderstandings that could create problems,” said UPF Commander, Police Superintendent Euclides Belo, speaking in Oecussi.

The border security authority emphasized that strict prohibitions remain in place, particularly against citizens attempting to import goods illegally, especially fireworks, due to a total ban.

“Regarding the import of fireworks, UPF maintains control along the border. If fireworks are to be brought in, they must follow legal channels, not illegal ones, because the ban is absolute. If we encounter violations, we will make arrests; if our TNI colleagues detect them, they will also communicate with us. Therefore, we urge all communities that if they need such items, they must obtain proper licenses and have a clear purpose,” Belo appealed.

Meanwhile, Commander of Satgas-Pamtas TNI West Sector, Lieutenant Colonel Arh Endis Fahrul Rizal, encouraged citizens of both Timor-Leste and Indonesia to continue respecting border regulations.

“All communities, especially those living in border areas on both sides, must continue to follow the rules, which signify the existence of national boundaries. As authorized agencies responsible for guarding the border, we expect communities to comply with these regulations,” Rizal stated in Indonesian.

He added that the presence of both UPF and TNI is intended not only to enforce rules but also to support communities living near the border.

“We also assist communities in overcoming challenges in border areas. With our presence, both UPF and TNI. We hope to provide positive contributions to communities, helping to create security and engagement along the frontier,” he concluded.
