DILI, 26 March 2026 (TATOLI) — The government of Timor-Leste has expressed solidarity with the people and government of Cuba amid the ongoing U.S. economic, trade, and financial embargo, in effect since the 1960s and increasingly restrictive in recent years, with particularly severe impacts in 2026.

In a statement released today, the government said the intensification of restrictive measures—including extraterritorial sanctions and fuel supply limitations—has contributed to a multidimensional crisis in Cuba.

“The country faces energy shortages, economic constraints, and scarcity of essential goods, directly affecting living conditions and access to food, healthcare, and other vital services,” read the statement.

In this context, Timor-Leste reiterated that international relations should be guided by dialogue, respect for international law, and principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, including the rights of peoples to development and well-being.

Timor-Leste also highlighted the longstanding cooperation between the two nations.

“Cuba supported Timor-Leste during its struggle for national liberation and has continued to assist the country since independence, notably through the training of over 1,000 Timorese doctors and the ongoing presence of Cuban professionals in healthcare, education, and sports programs. The government expressed gratitude to the Cuban people for their enduring support,” the statement added.

Speaking on behalf of the government, Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Government Spokesperson Agio Pereira said, “Timor-Leste follows with concern the situation faced by the Cuban people and reaffirms its commitment to solutions based on dialogue and respect for international law.”
