DILI, 27 March 2026 (TATOLI) — President Jose Ramos-Horta on Thursday called for greater support and recognition of women entrepreneurs, highlighting their critical role in driving economic growth and community development in Timor-Leste.
Speaking at the “Female Founders Program” ceremony at Platinum Cineplex in Timor Plaza, Ramos-Horta praised Timorese women for their leadership in business and their contributions to both household welfare and the national economy.
The Head of State said women are “by nature and DNA smarter than men” in managing businesses, while commending their patience, attention to detail and resilience.
Ramos-Horta highlighted several grassroots economic successes driven by Timorese women across the municipalities.
The Head of State commended the hardworking entrepreneurs from Quelicai and lauded the women of Baguia, who lead a globally recognized, multi-million-dollar agro-forestry carbon credit project that has planted over 700,000 trees.
As Timor-Leste already joined ASEAN, the President urged these female leaders to seize new regional opportunities with determination and wisdom to continue propelling the nation’s economic growth forward.
The President also expressed his profound gratitude to international partners for their steadfast commitment to Timor-Leste, particularly noting Australia’s unwavering support even during the difficult years of the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Ramos-Horta warmly acknowledged his longtime friend Peter McMullin of the Good Business Foundation, alongside Australian Deputy Secretary Michelle Chan and Ambassador Kathleen Wilson. Reaffirming the strong bilateral ties, the ceremony underscored a shared vision for development: that the future success and resilience of Timor-Leste relies heavily on the empowerment of its women.
