DILI, 07 April 2026 (TATOLI) – Malaysian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Amarjit Sarjit Singh, met with Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão on Tuesday to mark the conclusion of his more than three-year tenure in Dili, highlighting several significant achievements in bilateral relations.

During the meeting, Amarjit emphasized that Malaysia–Timor-Leste relations continue to strengthen, particularly through Malaysia’s support for Timor-Leste’s ongoing accession process to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

“Malaysia continues to cooperate to ensure that Timor-Leste integrates effectively into ASEAN,” he said, noting Malaysia’s assistance from the initial stages of membership through full integration within the regional organization.

He highlighted that bilateral cooperation between the two countries has focused on infrastructure development, including roads and conference facilities, as well as building human resource capacity through training programs for Timorese public officials.

Amarjit expressed gratitude to the 9th Constitutional Government for its close collaboration during his diplomatic mandate.

Among the key achievements he highlighted was the completion of the land grant from the Timor-Leste government for the construction of a new Malaysian embassy building in Dili. Construction mobilization is scheduled to begin early next year, with completion targeted between 2029 and 2030.

Amarjit also cited his efforts to promote Timor-Leste’s ASEAN membership as one of the proudest accomplishments of his tenure.

In addition, he highlighted improvements in connectivity, including the establishment of direct flights between Dili and Kuala Lumpur.

“Malaysia will continue to support Timor-Leste’s future development efforts,” he said.
