DILI, 16 April 2026 (TATOLI) — The government on Wednesday held the second meeting of the ASEAN Chairship National Organizing Council (ACNOC) as Timor-Leste steps up preparations to assume the rotating presidency of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 2029.
Vice-Prime Minister and Minister Coordinator for Economic Affairs and Minister of Tourism and Environment, Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, focused on strengthening institutional readiness and improving coordination across government ministries ahead of the chairmanship.
During the meeting, officials reviewed key national priorities across the political, economic and social sectors, focusing on strengthening inter-ministerial coordination and aligning preparations with ASEAN-related responsibilities.
Kalbuadi Lay said institutional preparedness and cross-sector coordination would be essential for Timor-Leste to effectively lead the regional bloc.
It is essential to ensure institutions are ready to contribute effectively to the ASEAN chairmanship,” he said, stressing the need for coordinated efforts in infrastructure, security and diplomacy.
The meeting brought together members of the government from various ministries to ensure preparations proceed in a structured and coordinated manner, officials said.
The first ACNOC meeting was held in February, marking the start of what the government has described as the “foundation phase.” During that session, authorities approved a framework for 14 operational subcommittees and reviewed the 2026 annual work plan.
