DILI, 28 April 2026 (TATOLI) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, held bilateral talks with his Cypriot counterpart, Constantinos Kombos, to strengthen bilateral cooperation and reinforce solidarity between small island states.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 25th ASEAN–EU Ministerial Meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.
During the meeting, Minister Bendito expressed Timor-Leste’s sincere appreciation for Cyprus’ longstanding support during Timor-Leste’s struggle for independence.
Both Ministers noted that both countries share important historical experiences, particularly their respective journeys toward sovereignty, resilience, and national self-determination.
As small island states with strategic maritime interests, both Ministers emphasized the importance of stronger cooperation among small states in navigating an increasingly complex global environment.
They underscored the need to promote solidarity, mutual support, and practical partnerships that advance national development and regional stability.
The discussion also provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on expanding bilateral cooperation in key strategic sectors, including maritime security, the blue economy, fisheries, and education.
Both Ministers recognized the importance of these sectors in supporting sustainable economic growth, national resilience, and long-term prosperity.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to pursue follow-up technical discussions on the identified priority areas of cooperation and to further strengthen diplomatic communication and bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and Cyprus.
