DILI, 30 April 2026 (TATOLI) — Timor-Leste and Germany reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation across several areas considered crucial to Timor-Leste’s development.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 25th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam, between Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, and Germany’s Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, Florian Hahn.
During the meeting, Freitas highlighted the importance of deepening ties between Timor-Leste and Germany, particularly in technical and vocational education and training (TVET), science, engineering and technology, diplomatic capacity-building, investment, and support for Timor-Leste’s preparations for its ASEAN chairmanship in 2029.
Minister Florian Hahn expressed appreciation for the successful convening of the 25th ASEAN–EU Ministerial Meeting, noting that strengthened ASEAN–EU cooperation sends an important positive signal amid the current complex and uncertain global environment.
He also conveyed Germany’s gratitude for Timor-Leste’s support for Germany’s candidature for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, as well as Timor-Leste’s principled position in support of Ukraine and the rules-based international order.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation and agreed to pursue follow-up technical discussions through established diplomatic channels to identify concrete priority areas for future collaboration.
