DILI, 09 May 2026 (TATOLI) – President Jose Ramos-Horta held a meeting on Friday at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace with Ego Lemos, the Executive Director of Permatil, to coordinate the nation’s upcoming climate and environmental agenda.

The discussions focused on Timor-Leste’s participation in the Pre-COP 31 meetings in Fiji and Vanuatu, as well as the official delegation for COP 31, which the President confirmed will be led by the Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão and the National Ambassador for Climate Change, Adão Barbosa.

During the audience, the President expressed his full support for youth-led sustainability initiatives by agreeing for the official certification for the International Permaculture Youth Convergence 2026.

President Ramos-Horta was also formally invited to open the Maribia Permayouth Camp on June—a significant event that combines environmental education with the historical commemoration of the June 10th massacre—and the Viqueque Permayouth Camp scheduled for September 2026. These initiatives underscore the Presidency’s commitment to empowering the next generation of ecological leaders.

The meeting also highlighted the extraordinary success of Timor-Leste’s water conservation efforts, which have seen over 800 water sources restored across the country.

Ego Lemos briefed the President on “Permatil Global,” a new initiative to export this successful Timorese model to Pacific neighbors such as Samoa and Papua New Guinea. To further this global leadership, the Presidential Palace will host an International Symposium on Water, Peace, and Diplomacy this October, welcoming the UN Special Envoy for Water to witness Timor-Leste’s progress firsthand.
