DILI, 22 June 2026 (TATOLI) — Portuguese President António José Seguro on Sunday expressed profound sadness at the passing of former Timor-Leste President Francisco Guterres ‘Lú Olo’, praising his pivotal role in the country’s struggle for independence and the establishment of the nation’s democratic institutions.
In his condolence message, Seguro paid tribute to Lú Olo as one of the architects of modern Timor-Leste, citing his leadership during the independence movement and his subsequent efforts to strengthen the nation’s democratic institutions.
The Portuguese leader recalled that Lú Olo served as president of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent Timor-Leste, or Fretilin, chaired the Constituent Assembly, and became the first president of the National Parliament.
Together with other historic Timorese leaders, he helped lay the foundations of the country’s democratic institutions, Seguro said.
Seguro also highlighted Lú Olo’s tenure as President of the Republic from 2017 to 2022, saying he played an important role during key moments in the country’s political development.
The Portuguese president further praised Lú Olo’s commitment to national reconciliation, noting that throughout his political career he consistently advocated dialogue, peace and unity.
Seguro extended his condolences to Lú Olo’s family, friends and the people of Timor-Leste, expressing Portugal’s solidarity as the nation observes a period of national mourning.
