DILI, 03 July 2026 (TATOLI) — The Government of Timor-Leste has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Jesuit priest Father João Vasconcelos Baptista Felgueiras, who died in Dili on Friday at the age of 105 after dedicating more than five decades to serving the Timorese people.
Born in Caldas das Taipas, Guimarães, Portugal, on June 9, 1921, Father Felgueiras arrived in Timor-Leste in 1971 to serve as vice rector of the Seminary of the Diocese of Dili. A Jesuit missionary, Portuguese language teacher and educator, he played a key role in educating generations of Timorese and preserving the Portuguese language, including during the Indonesian occupation when its use was banned.
After Indonesia invaded the territory in 1975, Father Felgueiras chose to remain in Timor-Leste despite the personal risks and advice to leave. The government said he stood alongside the Timorese people during one of the country’s darkest periods, providing pastoral, educational and humanitarian support that helped safeguard national identity while promoting solidarity, human dignity and hope.
His commitment to education extended beyond the classroom. Through the FACSI charitable fund of the Society of Jesus and the Comunidade Amigos de Jesus, he helped provide scholarships to hundreds of Timorese students, many of whom later assumed senior roles in government and society. His legacy also lives on through institutions including the Padre António Vieira Youth Centre and the Amigos de Jesus School, which continue his mission of educating young people.
In recognition of his contributions, Timor-Leste awarded Father Felgueiras the Insignia of the Order of Timor-Leste in 2009 and the Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste, the country’s highest state honour, in 2022. He was granted Timorese citizenship in 2011 in recognition of his distinguished service to the nation.
Portugal also honoured him with the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of Liberty in 2002 and the Grand Cross of the Order of Camões in 2022. During his Apostolic Visit to Timor-Leste in 2024, Pope Francis personally paid tribute to Father Felgueiras in recognition of his lifelong service to the Timorese people.
Father Felgueiras’ legacy would remain inseparable from the history of Timor-Leste, describing his life as an enduring example of service, courage, solidarity and commitment to education, justice, human dignity and national development.
Government spokesperson and Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers Agio Pereira extended condolences to the Society of Jesus, the Catholic Church, Father Felgueiras’ family, friends, former students and the Timorese people.
“In this time of mourning, the Government extends its deepest condolences to the Society of Jesus, the Catholic Church, his family, friends, former students and all the people of Timor-Leste,” Pereira said. “We share in the sorrow of his passing and pay tribute to the memory of a man who made Timor-Leste his homeland in both mission and heart.”
