DILI, 03 July 2026 (TATOLI) — Portuguese Jesuit priest Father João Felgueiras, who dedicated more than five decades of his life to the Catholic Church and the people of Timor-Leste, died on Friday in Dili at the age of 105.

Father Felgueiras died at about 5:30 p.m. local time at Dili Medical Center after an illness.

Born in Guimarães, Portugal, on June 9, 1921, Father Felgueiras was the eighth of nine children. He was ordained a Catholic priest on July 30, 1950, and arrived in Timor-Leste in 1971, when the territory was still under Portuguese administration.

He spent more than five decades carrying out his pastoral, educational and humanitarian mission in the country.

When Indonesia invaded Timor-Leste in 1975, Father Felgueiras chose to remain despite the risks. He continued his pastoral work throughout the occupation and witnessed some of the violence that marked the period.

He also became known for defending the Portuguese language at a time when its use was restricted. Father Felgueiras taught Portuguese in secret, including at Externato de São José, which continued offering Portuguese classes until Indonesian authorities forcibly closed the school in 1992.

His lifelong commitment to Timor-Leste and its people earned him recognition from both Portugal and Timor-Leste. In 2002, he was awarded the Order of Liberty by Jorge Sampaio. In 2016, he received the Insignia of the Order of Timor-Leste from then-President Taur Matan Ruak.

In 2024, during Pope Francis’ apostolic visit to Timor-Leste, Father Felgueiras met the pontiff in what became one of the most memorable moments of the final years of his life.
