President Ramos-Horta attends the opening of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York
DÍLI, 23 September 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, attended, on Tuesday, the opening session of the General Debate of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The high-level gathering brings together leaders and representatives from various countries to discuss major global challenges, promote dialogue, and strengthen international cooperation.
The 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly is being held under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that responds to the needs of all.”
On the occasion, the Head of State was accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, Vice-Minister for ASEAN Affairs, Milena Rangel, and Timor-Leste’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Dionísio Babo Soares.
The President of the Republic’s participation in this important international forum reaffirms Timor-Leste’s commitment to multilateralism, peaceful dialogue, and a rules-based international order.
Timor-Leste’s presence at the UN General Assembly also provides an opportunity to strengthen its engagement with the United Nations system and reaffirm its contribution to collective efforts in support of peace, sustainable development, and international solidarity.
