President Ramos-Horta holds informal meeting with UN Secretary-General in New York

DILI, 23 September 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, J. Ramos-Horta, held an informal meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, on Tuesday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), following the opening ceremony of the General Debate, which brings together Heads of State and Government and representatives from various countries.

During the meeting, the President of the Republic and the Secretary-General of the United Nations exchanged brief greetings in a cordial atmosphere following the opening session of the General Assembly.

The occasion also provided an opportunity for the Head of State and the UN Secretary-General to meet in the context of Timor-Leste’s participation in the work of the General Assembly.

The President’s presence in New York reaffirms Timor-Leste’s commitment to multilateralism, dialogue and international cooperation, as well as its active engagement in the United Nations system.
