DILI, october 26, 2021 (TATOLI)- The Secretariat State for Equality and Inclusion (SEII) launched a strategic framework for women and people with disabilities to participate in the 2022 elections.
“The establishment of the strategic framework is aimed to ensure the team building to be able to carry out activities in various areas at the national and municipalities level. This strategic framework is focused on women and people with disabilities to obtain skills and abilities,” The State Secretary of Equality and Inclusion (SII), Maria José Fonseca informed the media at Delta Nova, this Tuesday.
Ms. Fonseca said this strategic framework will allow women to take the opportunity to participate in the seminar for the election process, the general democratic for inclusive participation which launched on women’s working group for the Future Leader and Strategic Framework.
The strategic framework plan comprises several aspects including increasing the capacity of training, gender-sensitive budget for women, accessible infrastructure for people with disabilities, consolidating and increasing the number of genders and inclusive on increasing participation of women in political life, inclusive security in the candidature of women and media for gender-sensitive and inclusive communication.
At the same place, The representative of people with disabilities, Gaspar Afonso, said that the Government should create a condition so that people with disabilities can exercise their right to vote in secret.
“People with disabilities have been accompanied in the elections. This does not guarantee your right to vote. Our vote is still not a secret when we are accompanied by family and colleagues”, He said
Following the official data record from the MSSI, Timor-Leste registered about 30.118 people with disabilities.
The record also indicates 38% of women have been involved in the politic in 2020, 19% of women occupied the seats in the PN, At the suco level, only 21 women (4%) were elected as Suco Chief in 2016.
