DILI, 3 november 2021 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres ‘Lu Olo’ called for equal opportunity in education and in the workplace for women.
LuOlo made the call during the commemoration of National Women’s Day, on november 3.
In a press release, Lú Olo urged parents to send their daughters to public or private institutions for merit selection, regardless of gender.
According to Timor-Leste’s Census 2015, the number of women is equal to that of men, therefore a partnership between women and men in all aspects is needed, such as from the family to society.
“Women are a force in society which we cannot distance ourselves, because women will make significant impacts on economic sustainability and social development,” he said.
LuOlo said that the participation of women is not only contributing to national development, but also to the enrichment of democracy.
November 3 was declared as Timor-Leste’s National Women’s Day, following the death of Maria Tapo, Timor-Leste’s first heroine who passed away on that day during a deadly battle in 1975.
