As dengue cases rise, Chinese Embassy distributes 280 mosquito nets to communities in Bemori

DILI, 30 january 2022 (TATOLI) — The Chinese Ambassador to Timor-Leste distributed 280 mosquito nets to the communities in Bemori neighborhood to combat dengue.

According to a statement released by the Chinese Embassy, Ambassador Xiao Jianguo said that the distribution of the mosquito nets to the communities in Bemori and FIAR Association aimed to reduce Timor-Leste’s hospitalized dengue cases which have surpassed 1.000 cases.

“As the dengue situation started to get worse, the Chinese Embassy, today, distributed the mosquito nets to communities in Bemori and FIAR Association in collaboration with the relevant parties to combat dengue in the country,” said Xiao in a statement released on january 28.

Xiao emphasized that, as a friend of Timor-Leste, China would cooperate with the Government of Timor-Leste in every area.

“Health sector would be the main focus to combat the epidemic to ensure public health for the people of Timor-Leste and strengthen the ties between Timor-Leste and China,” he said.

Present at the handover ceremony included Mrs. Veneranda Lemos, the President of the FIAR Association, and the head of the Bemori village.

According to the official data of the Ministry of Health, as of 28 january, Timor-Leste recorded 1132 cases of dengue, with 19 deaths. The majority of the cases were children below five years old. Of the 1132 cases, 770 were recorded in Dili, with ten deaths.
