Timor-Leste and the US will soon negotiate two agreements

DILI, 16 february 2022 (TATOLI) – The governments of Timor-Leste and the United States of America (USA) will soon negotiate the Millennium Challenge Compact and Program Implementation Agreement.

“The Council of Ministers authorized the negotiation of the two agreements between our country and the United States of America. The agreements in question are – Millennium Challenge Compact and Program Implementation Agreement. On the other hand, the council gave full powers to the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers to carry out the negotiation and sign the agreement”, said Fidélis Magalhães, Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, in statements to journalists, at the Government Palace, in Dili

Therefore, the official stressed that he would lead the entire process that involves formal negotiation with the Americans. The signing of the agreement will take place in April, in the United States of America.

The official added that the two agreements are intended to improve sanitation and the education sector.

It is recalled that the representative of the United States of America (USA) in Timor-Leste, the Foreign Affairs officer at the US Embassy, ​​Elias Parra, had previously met with Minister Fidélis Magalhães, to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the area of ​​development and information on the MCC programme.

“The meeting served to update information from the Minister of the Ministry of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers on matters related to the United States mission in Timor-Leste, with emphasis on the program carried out by the Corporation for Millennium Challenges group” , Elias Parra speaking to journalists at the Government Palace.

The coordinator also pointed out that the Timorese Government and the USA will celebrate, this year, a cooperation agreement that aims to continue the MCC program and, in this way, cement the joint relationship between the two nations.

Elias Parra added that the MCC, led by Constâncio Pinto, will carry out its program carried out on Timorese soil to the end.

“The MCC project will focus mainly on the education and sanitation sectors, whose allocated budget will be 280 million US dollars”, he concluded.
