DILI, 10 june 2022 (TATOLI)– Australian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, William Castello advised the Government of Timor-Leste to increase domestic income and diversify the economy as both are key challenges in Timor-Leste.
Ambassador, Bill Castillo, addressed his statement during the Timor-Leste Development Partners Meeting (TLDPM), at the Ministry of Finance, in Dili, today.
“Economic diversification and increasing domestic income are key challenges in Timor-Leste, thus the government should focus on this issue to reduce dependence on oil resources and create more job opportunities,” Castillo said.
To that end, the Ambassador said: The government needs to improve the economic sustainability, effectiveness, and efficacy of spending public money to ensure the impact of the limited resources.
At the same time, Ambassador Castello also recognized the important role of civil society in promoting the democratic system and establishing women’s business groups to contribute to the country’s economic development.
With the holding of the Timor-Leste Development Partners Meeting, Ambassador Castillo said that as a partner, they are proud to be able to support Timor-Leste to recover its economy.
“Development partners are proud to support Timor-Leste to enhance its economic recovery in Timor-Leste. We also really appreciate the government’s decision to invite civil society to discuss together the country’s problems,” Ambassador highlighted.
At the event, the Ambassador also congratulated the New President, José Ramos Horta on being elected as the President of the Republic of Timor-Leste. He also appreciates the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Taur Matan Ruak for his commitment and dedication to assisting this country.
The Ambassador also appreciated the Ministry of Finance for organizing this event to gather all development partners to find solutions to the country’s problems.
Attending the event were the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, Ministry of Finance of Timor-Leste, Rui Agusto Gomes, and Government Members, Development Partners, Civil Society, and other relevant parties.
