DILI, 11 august 2022 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic of Timor, José Ramos Horta, has appointed the former Head of State, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, to represent President Horta, in the new Consistory of Cardinals, at the Vatican.
“The President of the Republic welcomes the invitation to participate in the coronation ceremony of the Cardinal of Timor-Leste, Dom Virgílio do Carmo da Silva. However, the Head of State will not be present due to agenda reasons. Therefore, on 27 August, his deputy, the main negotiator for the Timor-Leste border, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, will leave for the Vatican,” Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak said at Presidential Palace, inAitarak-Laran, Dili.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Adaljiza Magno added that Fidélis Magalhães and José Lucas were delegated by the Government to attend the Cardinal Oath in the Vatican.

Meanwhile, the Vice-President of the National Parliament, Luís Roberto da Silva, said “The Vice President of the PN, Maria Angelina Sarmento, will be part of the delegation to participate in the Cardinals Oath in the Vatican, which the current Archbishop of Dili, Virgílio do Carmo da Silva, will take oath as the first Cardinal of Timor-Leste, together with Secretary Lídia Norberta dos Santos and Regina Freitas,”
The elevation ceremony of the first Timorese Cardinal and the other new Cardinals will take place on august 27.
Archbishop of Dili, Virgílio do Carmo da Silva will depart for the Vatican on august 22 to receive the red hat on august 27. He is one of six new cardinals from Asia — five archbishops and one bishop.
